The 2nd Forum on Asian Industrial Heritage Conservation and the Field School Rounded Off and the Preparation for the 3rd Forum in 2020 Starts

The 2nd Asian Industrial Heritage Conservation Forum and Field School were hosted from July 1 to 4, 2019 in Chiayi City, Taiwan by the Asian Network of Industrial Heritage (ANIH) with the theme of “Cultural Preservation and Practice of World Railways and Alishan Forest Railway”. A total of 26 experts and scholars from 9 countries, including the UK, Slovak, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Australia, and New Zealand were invited to share their practical experience and exchange their in-depth views. The major topics covered “Value of Railway and Cultural Heritage”, “Experiences of Indian Heritage Railway”, “Operation of Heritage Railway in Europe”, “Activation of Industrial Railways in Japan” and “Vision of Asia-Pacific Heritage Railway Preservation”, etc. Through the sharing of international case studies, it provided practitioners, researchers, and students in the field of cultural heritage with a communication platform to gain a better understanding of railway heritage conservation and management of each country and promote further cooperation.

The International Youth Field School was under the theme of “Preservation and Practice of Asia-Pacific Railway Heritage”. Through the online application procedure, twenty applicants aged 18 to 45 from the UK, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan were elected. The participants were divided into 3 groups during the field school, and group presentations were delivered by them at the end. Conclusions proposed by each group are as follows:

Group 1. The conservation and maintenance of railway heritage should simultaneously adopt old and new techniques and mutually assist. Group 2. The participation of experts and volunteers are very important to the conservation and operation of railway heritage; the development of the railway-imagery products will help promote and preserve the cultural heritage. Group 3. The universal values of heritage railway should demonstrate the original features of its ecology.

To preserve the spirit of the Taipei Declaration for Asian Industrial Heritage issued by TICCIH in 2012 and take the opportunity of hosting the 2nd Asian Industrial Heritage Conservation Forum, the 2nd International Preparatory Meeting was also convened on July 2, 2019. Fifteen experts and scholars from Japan, New Zealand, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Korea and Taiwan gathered together to discuss on the operation principle, the long-term development direction and the 2020 implementation works of ANIH and collectively signed the consensus agreement, which will be a foundation for ANIH to promote related affairs in the future. Last but not least, we will continue to achieve our goals- “Multilateral Communication”, “Information Sharing” and “Transnational Collaboration”.

Snowdonia Slate - "The Industrial Heritage of a National Park”

by Gwasg Carreg Gwalch, UK / Des Marshall, 2019/04

Quarrying and mining slate was once a booming industry that added much to the local economy and has been dubbed 'the most Welshest of industries'. This book illustrates and records the current surface remains of some of the abandoned slate mines and quarries of Snowdonia.

It is not exhaustive, as there are over 500 quarries and mines as well as early surface scratching in the area. Only the main mines and quarries with the more recognizable remains are recorded herein. Short notes on the quarries or mines have been included.

The Introduction of Taiwan’s Water System Heritage

by The Bureau of Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture, Taiwan / Chun-Ming Huang & Yu-Chen Chien, 2019/05

Taiwan is located along the Tropic of Cancer and has a subtropical climate with rains and typhoons. Besides, the Central Mountain Range of Taiwan Island causes the rapid flow of river water and the lack of water storage capacity. Therefore, the people have developed diversified and unique facilities and techniques of collecting, using and managing water. Furthermore, it has accumulated plentiful features of Taiwan’s water resources, which is Taiwan’s precious cultural heritage.

This introduction looks at 22 cases of water-related facilities and systems in Taiwan, and share the diversity and distinctiveness of these facilities with the readers. Through this introduction, readers are able to get a better understanding of Taiwan and its water facilities as historical sites.

Waterways and the Cultural Landscape (Routledge Cultural Heritage and Tourism Series)

by Routledge, UK / Francesco Vallerani & Francesco Visentin , 2019/07

This book explores the role of waterways as a form of heritage, culture and sense of place and the potential of this to underpin the development of cultural tourism. With a multidisciplinary approach across the social sciences and humanities, chapters explore how the control and management of water flows are among some of the most significant human activities to transform the natural environment.

Based upon a wealth and breadth of European case studies, the book uncovers the complex relationships we have with waterways, the ways that they have been represented over recent centuries and the ways in which they continue to be redefined in different cultural contexts.
